J.K. Coi lives in Ontario, Canada with her husband and son. She graduated university with a degree in history and in law, and has worked for many years in the legal field. Her current focus is in intellectual property law.
Writing has always been an important part of her life, and when she leaves the office, she leaves it all behind to immerse herself in a world of fantasy—of demons and magic, fascinating warriors, and the women strong enough to love them.
When she isn't spinning exciting tales of love and adventure, you'll find J.K. cheering on her son at the soccer field or watching her husband play hockey. She also likes to paint and create beautiful treasures with stained glass.
Behind the Scenes of J.K's Immortals series
We asked J.K. what inspired her to write the Immortals series...
"Although I wrote poetry and short stories back when I was in school, I hadn't written a thing other than Court documents and grocery lists in many years, career and family having taken their toll on my available time. But then one day I was watching television early in the evening, and I realized my son was sleeping peacefully in bed, my husband was fiddling around in the garage, and I had some time on my hands. Not only that, but I was actually bored. My television viewing options were pretty pathetic, and I didn't have any books left on my TBR pile, but I knew what I wanted to read. So I sat myself down at the computer, and since I didn't have internet access back then, I found myself writing. It's amazing how much of the story came out in just that first night. It was completely raw, and the plot holes would swallow your car, but the kernel was there...and it was good!
I didn't really think about a series in those first few months writing My Immortal (which went through at least two name changes), but the more I got to know Rhys and Amy, the more their world became real. The Immortals came out of me, and they were strong, brave, sexy men who jumped from the page with life...and a variety of demands that I just couldn't ignore."
J.K. Coi Trivia:
1. She is a Leo, the oldest of three children, and a total pro at torturing her younger brother and sister, even to this day.
2. Born in the West (Alberta), she has since lived in or traveled to nine of Canada's 10 Provinces and 3 Territories. 3. Her favorite vacation took her to Greece, where she ran the track at the Athens Olympic Stadium.
4. She loves scuba diving, and although she's only done it once, lessons are on that list of things to do before she dies. 5. Some other things she's been able to cross off the aforesaid list: having her artwork displayed at a gallery; skydiving; flying an airplane (although she was supervised the entire time by her uncle the bush pilot); and being published.
6. Her husband proposed to her during exam week. One afternoon while she was studying very hard for two finals—two—he showed up at her door with Chinese food and "popped the question", after which he promptly left again so that she could continue her review of nineteenth century British Imperialist history.
7. She loves rap music, even though she is very much aware of how ridiculous she looks cruising through the suburbs in her economical blue compact with Fifty Cent blaring out the speakers. 8. Her favourite painter is Claude Monet, her favourite composer is George Frideric Handel, and her favourite sculpture is Rodin's The Thinker.
9. Her favourite poem is Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, and her favourite quote is from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: "Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius."
10. Although she's been blessed (read: cursed) with a smart mouth and a sick sense of humour, she's also very painfully shy in person, which is why the internet is one of her favourite inventions, and a double-edged sword that will probably get her in trouble one of these days.
What's Next?
Available August 1, 2008, Book 2 of the Immortals series, Immortal Kiss:
Evil lurks in the darkest of shadows, but a band of warriors stands ready to defend humanity against hell's own monsters—Immortal men hand-picked by destiny and taken out of time hold the fate of the world in their hands.
It has been two years since Baron's initiation into the world of the Immortals, and during that time, he's been training with them, setting aside his past to embrace the challenges of his new future…a future without Maxine Deveraux.
Maxine is strong, determined, and loyal to a fault. The last person she wants to have to face is Baron Silver, the man who broke her heart, leaving her without an explanation or even a goodbye. But Maxine gave her word to Baron's brother Jackson that she'd track him down and bring him home…and Max always keeps her promises.
When Baron encounters a vicious vampire who vows to destroy everything he loves, it doesn't faze him in the least. He gave up everything he loved along with his humanity. But then the demon attacks Maxine leaving her broken and battered on Baron's doorstep and he realizes there are still things he can lose…and they are things he can't live without.
And then don't miss The Trouble With Destiny, in October, 2008:
Mild-mannered Sarah McInnes just wants to be left alone. She's looking forward to finishing graduate school and then working a nice, normal nine-to-five job as an accountant. But when fate interferes with her carefully laid plans in the form of the mysterious and sexy Dorian, her life takes an unexpected detour.
Dorian is a take-no-prisoners kind of guy. For him, duty comes first. So when he intervenes one night to save Sarah from the murderous hands of a daemon and discovers she has the innate ability to fight them, he of course steps in and offers to train her. Daemons notwithstanding, the job would be much easier and their relationship less complicated if Dorian didn't also happen to be the hottest thing this side of hell.
Now instead of spending her nights in the library Sarah spends them with Dorian, keeping the city safe from monsters and sending them back where they belong. Whether she wants to or not, Sarah has to face the facts: daemons exist, she possesses the power to kill them, and she may never make it to Calculus on time again. That's the Trouble with Destiny...
